Abstract
This study investigated the incidence of
obesity among the female working class in Federal Polytechnic, Idah.
Cross-sectional survey and random sampling of one hundred and ninety-three
respondents selected between the ages of 20–60 years were used. Structured
questionnaire was also used to collect socio demographic data of the
respondents. The anthropometric measurements were carried out and analysis
conducted using standard methods. Results showed that the body mass index,
waist circumference and body fat percentage varied from 27.55-29.41kg/m2,
88.69-99.44cm, and 25.62-30.01% respectively with 36.26% being overweight,
37.82% obese, 73.06% abdominal obese and 44.04% having unhealthy body fat. The
food intake of the respondents was found to be dominated by starchy foods. A
possible deduction from this study is that obesity was significantly associated
with age (31-50years).
