Probiotics: Health implications and future prospective

Probiotics are thelive microorganisms which, when administered inadequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host. Their benefits to human race have been proven by many scientific researches. The growing awareness about the relationship between diet and health, has led to the advent of functional foods. The Probiotics can be a boon to functional food industry due to its potency in enhancing gastrointestinal health, and thereby an overall health. While probiotics in the form of drugs are widely accepted, probiotic foods are still viewed with scepticism. Acceptance is growing slowly, but it will take a long time while before changing the mindset of Indian consumers. There is still a need for developing various foods with probiotic origin or inclusion.
